Montgomery glanced at the stars, his mouth remembering the feel of that stolen kiss. The sensation of her lips against his. How could he look upon her as his father’s new bride? The old man would make a fool of himself if he took her as a wife and she would be destined to a life of servitude, worse than a life with Hemming. One thing he knew for sure, his father could never satisfy her desire in any way. The match was doomed. He would return and talk some sense into the man, before it was too late.

Thomas, his stepbrother, might well take to the young and pretty Ellie, she was young, eager to discover new sensations and burning to live. He had felt it in her, it would be a light extinguished by the restrictive existence her father would offer her under the watchful gaze of his grandmother. The old bat had killed off Amelia’s drive for life; he would not let her do it to another.

Where Mrs Hemming fitted into this, he did not know. He had thought Ellie to be a gold-digger, but now realised she was no more than a puppet in her aunt’s plans, but why? Mrs Hemming cared nothing for the girl of that he was sure, so she was securing her, what on paper, would be a good match. He did not know the truth, but he would find out.

Montgomery closed his eyes for a moment and visualised Ellie dancing in the grand assembly rooms in London, with the young ladies of society, those finely dressed, moneyed families. He could easily imagine her moving in a classical Greek dress, fine fabric showing those exquisite contours off to perfection. Her gorgeous golden locks tumbling in curls down her swan like neck. Her body moving with grace and suppleness… A gust of wind blew bringing him out of his musings – reluctantly, because it was an image he would like to see in reality. If not the father’s wife, she would make a beautiful mistress for the son. Did she take after her mother yet had not followed that path yet? That is of course, if the mother’s reputation had not been besmirched by Hemming’s skill at weaving lies. He would delight in finding out.
